Cozy vs Journey

Both are journaling apps. Journey goes wide, every platform, a web app, sync handled for you. Cozy goes narrow and keeps your writing as files you hold.

Journey is one of the few journaling apps that runs everywhere: phone, desktop, Linux, a browser tab. It's been around a long time and it's good at what it does. I built Cozy for a different priority: not being everywhere, but making sure the writing itself stays mine, in files, on my own disk, paid for once.

The short version

Where your journal lives

Journey syncs through Journey Cloud Sync on the Membership tier, or through your own Google Drive on any tier. Either way the entries are stored in Journey's own structure, the app can read them, and getting them out means running an export. Journey does encrypt entries end to end, and a lot of apps at this price don't.

Cozy has no server. Every entry is a plain file in a folder you chose. You can open that folder in Finder or Explorer right now and read your journal in Notepad, in TextEdit, in anything. There's nothing to export, because there's nothing wrapped up.

The free tier

Journey's free version isn't really a free journal. It's a look at one. You get 70MB of storage and 60 entries on sync, limited photo upload with no audio or video, no text formatting, and no custom templates. If you write most days you'll hit 60 entries in two months.

Cozy has no free tier. You can try it free for 7 days, with every feature and no account. After that it's $49 once, and if it isn't for you, I refund it in full within 14 days.

Pricing

Journey Membership is $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year, and there's a $199 lifetime purchase if you'd rather be done with it. Separately there's a one-time Premium unlock at $17.99 per platform. Its Journey Cloud Sync is capped, so most people bring their own Google Drive instead.

Cozy is $49, once. One purchase covers every Mac, Windows PC, iPhone and iPad you own. Bought inside the mobile app it's $49.99, once, and that includes the desktop app too. There's no subscription tier, because there's no server on my end to keep paying for.

Cozy costs less than one year of Journey Membership, and then it stops costing anything.

Where Journey is better

Reach, and it isn't close. Journey runs on iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Linux, and in a browser. Cozy runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and iPad. There's no Android app and no web version. If you carry an Android phone, or you want to write your journal from a locked-down work computer through a browser tab, Journey does something Cozy cannot.

Sync is the other one. Journey handles it for you across all of that. With Cozy you drag the folder into iCloud or Dropbox yourself. It takes a minute and then it works, but it's a minute Journey doesn't ask of you.

Where Cozy is better

Your entries are ordinary files, so the journal outlives the app. There's no account, no sign-in, and nothing about you on a server of mine. It's a desktop-first app rather than a phone app scaled up, made for writing a long entry at a real keyboard. And it's paid once: the bill doesn't come back every January.

About AI

Journey has AI built in: Odyssey AI, on Membership, is a chat with your past entries. Cozy has none, on purpose. I wrote up why Cozy doesn't have AI if you want the reasoning. The short version: I don't want a model reading over my shoulder in the place where I write the most private things I write.

So which one is for you?

If you need Android, Linux, or a web app, or you want sync handled for you across all of them, pick Journey. It's the more capable app on reach.

If you write mostly at a Mac or PC, you want the journal to be plain files you can still read in twenty years, and you'd rather pay once than subscribe, Cozy is the better fit.

“I've been using it for a week and I do not regret the purchase at all! :) Very solid, intuitive and aesthetic. I synced with two of my computers to be able to access it from bed, which is where I like to do my digital journaling, and works like a charm. I hope your app continues to grow!”

Common questions

Where do Cozy and Journey store your entries?
Journey keeps entries in its own cloud, or in your Google Drive, in Journey's own format. Cozy keeps every entry as a plain text file in a folder on your own computer. There is no Cozy server and no account.
How much does each app cost?
Journey Membership is $6.99 a month or $49.99 a year, with a $199 lifetime option. There's also a one-time Premium unlock at $17.99 per platform, with Journey Cloud Sync capped at 70MB and 60 entries. Cozy Standard is $49 once for Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPad, with no subscription. Cozy Forever is $89 once and makes updates on Mac and Windows free, always.
Is Journey free?
There's a free tier, but it's tight: 70MB of storage and 60 entries on sync, limited photo upload with no audio or video, and no text formatting or custom templates. It's a trial shape rather than a journal you'd keep for years.
Does Journey run on more platforms than Cozy?
Yes, and it's the main reason to pick it. Journey runs on iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Linux, and in a browser. Cozy runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and iPad. No Android, no web.
What's the best Journey alternative for people who want plain files?
If you're leaving Journey because you want your entries as ordinary files on your own disk, Cozy saves each one as a plain file in a folder you pick, with no account and no export step.
What happens to your journal if the app shuts down?
With Journey you'd need an export to take your entries anywhere else. With Cozy your journal is already a folder of plain files on your computer. You keep the folder.
Does Cozy sync across devices?
Cozy doesn't run a sync service. Because your journal is a folder, you can put it in iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, or anything similar and it syncs like your other files. If Cozy for iPhone and iPad is part of your setup it has to be iCloud Drive: that's the only folder an iOS app is allowed to read.
